In the following list of fishes and reptiles, known to occur as fossils in the Indoaustralian Archipelago, I have chiefly followed Smith Woodward (Bibl. 18) for the taxonomy. The teleosts, however, have been arranged according to Boulenger (The Cambridge Natural History, Vol. VII, 1904), with some slight alterations. I have not strictly followed the rules of zoological nomenclature and f. i. not changed Macrurus into Coryphaenoides. Palaeontologists are more conservative in this respect, and probably they are right.

Bleeker’s collection in the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam

It is of importance to know the history of zoological museum collections for it gives information about the trustworthiness of the habitat and the determination of the specimens in the collection. Mrs. Tera van der Feenvan Benthem Jutting, to whom this publication is dedicated, now that she is leaving the museum, has given an excellent account of the mollusc collection, which she had in care for so many years. In this short paper I shall try to give some information about the history of the ichthyological collections and specially of Bleeker’s collection.

Fishes of the eastern part of the Indo-Australian Archipelago with remarks on its zoogeography

The collection of fishes, brought together during my voyage in the eastern part of the Indo-Australian Archipelago in 1909—1910, consists of about 1700 specimens belonging to nearly 270 species, of which 9 were apparently new to science. 7 of these I have described previously, viz.: Rhombatractus catherinae in: Zool. Anz. XXXVI. p. 250, while the following gobies have been described in: Zool. Anz. XXXIX. p. 136: Gobius (Cryptocentrus) stigmatophorus, Gobius (Rhinogobius) scapulopunctatus, Schismatogobius bruynisi, Sicyopus multisquamatus, Sicyopterus brevis, Sicyopterus longifilis. Doryrhamphus brevidorsalis and Gobius oyensi are described here for the first time.

Freshwater fishes from the Leeward Group, Venezuela and eastern Colombia

This paper contains the results of the study of the fish-collection, made by P. Wagenaar Hummelinck, on the islands of the Leeward Group and some parts of the adjacent South-American continent, in 1936—’37 and in 1930. The latter have already been studied by Miss M. Sanders (1936) and are only included for completeness’ sake. The material has been presented to the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam.

Hendrik Engel 70 jaar

Bij een bezoek van Koningin Wilhelmina aan het Zoölogisch Museum van Amsterdam vroeg H.M. aan de conservator Dr. Engel wat zijn specialiteiten waren en kreeg ten antwoord: “Naaktslakken en Stekelhuidigen”. Jottings on protective colour in animals

I have often been puzzled about the remarkable change of colour in the roedeer, a species that I can watch almost daily from my house. In the winter the greyish brown coat can hardly be distinguished against the dull, brownish shrubby wood, at the border of which they come to feed. The only visible part of the animal is the white patch on their hindquarters. It is known that this patch is a guiding mark for the young to follow their mother. Some years ago a roedeer calf followed a boy on a bicycle with a white mudguard even to the boy's house. We may take it that also adults follow the leader by this mark. In the summer, on the contrary, the bright reddish coat makes the roedeer very conspicuous against the bright green background. I know how dangerous it...

On a new and interesting Globe-fish from New Guinea

MAX WEBER (1908, Nova Guinea, 5 (2): 264) referred 6 specimens of a globe-fish, collected by Dr. KOCH in the mouth of the Merauke River, New Guinea, to Tetrodon staigeri DE CASTELNAU. These specimens are in the Amsterdam Museum which later on received some more and still larger specimens from the same locality. Re-examination of these specimens showed me that they cannot be referred to T. staigeri, which is said to be near T. hispidus, and hence, according to the classification of FRASER-BRUNNER (1943, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. (11) 10: 1), belongs to the family Tetraodontidae, wherefes the Merauke specimens without doubt belong to the Lagocephalidae. It turned out that they belong to a new species,

On some Indo-Pacific Genera of Labroid fishes, with the description of a new genus and species

In 1853 BLEEKER (I, p. 489 and 490) described two species, both from the bay of Batavia, as Julis (Halichoeres) cyanopleura and Julis (Halichoeres) pyrrhogrammatoides. He pointed out that these two species are closely related, the first to Julis poecilopterus SCHL., the second to Julis pyrrhogramma SCHL., both from Japan. Lastnamed species differ from the javanese species, besides by slightly different colourmarkings, by having 14 rays in the dorsal and the anal, against 11 rays in both fins of the javanese species. BLEEKER says that but for the difference in the number of dorsal and anal rays, which is considerable, at least for this genus, he would be temped to consider the javanese species as climatic variations (“klimaatvarieteiten”) of the japanese...

The freshwater of Australia, New Guinea and some of the neighbouring islands are inhabited by peculiar fishes belonging to the Atherinidae and which are chiefiy distinguished by their compressed elevated form, long second dorsal and anal fins and generally by the presence of strong pungent spines in dorsals, anal and ventrals.
